Planning a trip out to Carbondale this fall? You’re sure to be in for a great time! One of our favorite day trips here is cruising along Route 6. This famous route is one of the oldest in the country, and there are several scenic and historical stops along the way!
Let’s explore a day trip, starting at Hotel Anthracite and heading over to Scranton!
Carbondale Historical Society & Museum
Before leaving Carbondale, kick off your trip with a visit to the Carbondale Historical Society & Museum. Located right in town, the museum gives you a glimpse into the area’s coal mining past. It’s a small but fascinating spot where you can learn about Carbondale’s role in the early industrial era. Spend some time exploring the exhibits before heading out on your road trip.
Archbald Pothole State Park
Have you ever heard about an entire state park named after a pothole? Well, now you have!
This quirky park is home to one of the largest glacial potholes in the world. This pothole is a bit different than what we’re used to on the roads; it’s a massive hole in the bedrock formed by melting glaciers thousands of years ago. It’s a quick stop but definitely worth checking out for a bit of natural history and a unique photo op!
Merli-Sarnoski Park
One of our favorite stops not far off Route 6 in Carbondale is Merli-Sarnoski Park. Get out of the car and stretch your legs a bit! It’s the perfect place to get in some mountain biking, head out on a hike, sit down for a picnic, or even go kayaking or fishing. There’s a 35 acre lake here that’s regularly stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, so there are plenty of fish to go around! There’s even a playground for your little ones to enjoy the day, as well as soccer fields, and basketball courts!
Along Route 6: Exploring Scranton
After enjoying the natural and historical stops along Route 6, you’ll arrive in Scranton. Known for its rich industrial past, Scranton has plenty to offer. Stop by the Steamtown National Historic Site to learn about the city’s railroad history, or visit the Electric City Trolley Museum for a fun, hands-on experience. If you’re in the mood for something more laid-back, Nay Aug Park is a great spot to take in waterfalls, explore trails, and relax in a peaceful setting.
Scenic Return to Hotel Anthracite Along Route 6
On your drive back to Hotel Anthracite, take your time and explore some of the smaller towns along Route 6. Stop at a local diner for a bite to eat or browse through a few antique shops. The scenic countryside will make the drive back just as enjoyable as the trip to Scranton!
